Ozarkapedia:How to add a new river access

From Ozarkapedia

Intro[edit source]

This page can be used to help you create a new River Access. All of the maps on Ozarkapedia are drawn dynamically using the information contained in pages. To say it another way, we don't really edit the map directly, we edit individual pages for accesses and then maps are updated automatically.

A form page is available that can help in the initial creation of a River Access Page: Form:River_Access

Steps[edit source]

  1. Start by creating the page for the access.
    1. Use the official name that appears on signage, websites, and publications
  2. The first line should call the River Access Template. It's a block of text that you fill in with related details.
{{Template:River Access         <!-- Don't change this line. -->
  |image=AllentonSign.jpg <!-- An image to use for the page. The sign is usually a good choice, but it's not mandatory. -->
  |caption=Allenton access main entrance sign
  |River=Meramec <!-- Whatever River, get the spelling right though -->
  |Coords=38.474616,-90.660124 <!-- Most other maps will let you copy and paste decimal coordinates - we need that here. -->
  |MileMarker=160.7 <!-- How many miles from 0 is this?
  |Operator=MDC <!-- Who's running the show? This helps someone know who to complain to, or follow the right rules. -->
  |Ramp Type=Concrete <!-- Concrete, Gravel, Slab, or Rough. Some places aren't very easy but enable excellent floating. -->
  |Parking=yes <!-- Set these to yes or no. Is it legal to park here?-->
  |Camping=no <!-- Set these to yes or no. Any camping facilities? Gravel bar camping DOES NOT count.-->
  |Restroom=no <!-- Set these to yes or no. Porta johns, pit toilets, and flushers all get "yes" -->
  |Trash=no <!-- Set these to yes or no. A single trash can is "Yes" -->
  |GaugeImg=https://water.noaa.gov/resources/hydrographs/erkm7_hg.png <!-- This is a link to the static hydrograph image for this area. You can leave this blank if you don't know how to find it, or which one to use. -->
  |GaugeLink=https://water.noaa.gov/gauges/ERKM7 <!-- Clicking on the gauge image takes you to this URL. -->
  |GaugeName=Eureka                                                       <!-- For the infobox label -->
  |Sections=Pacific to Eureka <!-- Which river sections are associated with this access? You can leave this blank if you don't know. -->
  |Upstream Access=Pacific Palisades <!-- Help folks navigate Ozarkapedia with a link to the next public access traveling upstream -->
  |Downstream Access=Route 66 State Park <!-- Same as previous, but going downstream. -->
}}

Description
PAGENAME is a concrete ramp on the Meramec river. Official Information Page

Gauges
Link to the most relevant gauge here, and talk about how the access changes at low vs. high water

Gallery
This is an example gallery. At a minimum, each access should have the main sign, along with the rules and bulletins board with date. Also include photos of the ramp itself from the top and bottom.

  1. Below the template, we can add the standard sections, and then fill them in.
  2. Lastly, include a line that associates this access with the relevant river section(s). This ensures that this point is included in the river section mini-maps.
    1. Some accesses will be part of multiple sections; two is common but more are possible when there are confluences nearby.

Calculating MileMarker[edit source]

The tedious way[edit source]

Use the "measure distance" tool on your favorite map application to trace a line from milemarker 0, or another known point

with our milemarker calculator tool[edit source]

There's a tool now that can assist: http://rivertools.s3-website-us-east-1.amazonaws.com/distancecalc/

  1. Copy the GeoJson from Ozarkapedia, eg GeoJson:Big River
    1. Click Edit Source and copy the whole thing
  2. Determine Mile Marker 0 lat,lon using e.g. Paddler's Guide and paste that in the appropriate box
  3. Drop in the lat,lon of the POI and click "Calculate Miles"
    1. You can use this same calculator to get coordinates from a milemarker. Put the milemarker into the box and click "Calculate Coords"
